Post NE Storm Shrimping Update

2008 October 15

I spoke with some people at the docks in McClellanville this morning, and most captains are reporting a catch of white shrimp that are 15 count (per pound) with the head on.  That translates into a nice big tail.  There are a few boats from McClellanville working off of Beaufort right now, and I haven’t heard what they’re catching yet.

The shrimp may get a little bigger, but some time in the next month is a good time to freeze some shrimp for the winter.  By mid November the white shrimp will dwindle a bit and the boats will be catching mostly brownies (brown shrimp) until the season closes sometime around January 15.  From then, its a long wait until mid-May without any shrimp in the freezer.
