Slick Calm Morning on Bull’s Bay

2008 December 5
by will

Stephen, Shawn, and I all were out on Bull’s Bay this morning.  Low tide was finally late enough (6:30am) to make it worth going out.  We went to Turtle Creek first, on the south end of the bay and found a few oysters, but not as many as we wanted. The bay was completely slick calm, and you couldn’t really tell where the water stopped and the sky started.  We decided to go out into the bay and cut up to Bull Creek, which would save us about 20 minutes over going around through the creeks.  The Bay had different ideas.

The funny thing about Bull’s Bay is that it is very shallow, but it looks deep.  Everybody had their favorite cuts through the mud flats and sandbars.  The way I would normally go is farther out into the bay and then cut back in, but Stephen knew of a cut that went right along the bank.  I was driving and half listened to Stephen and half listened to myself, and we ended up on a huge mud flat.  We all had to get out of the boat (wet up to our waists) and walk the boat off for about 20 minutes.  Diagnosis: Too many chiefs and not enough indians

It ended up taking about the same amount of time, and once we got back into the creeks, we found some beautiful oysters.  I ate a few while I was working, and they really don’t get much saltier.  We’ll be out all weekend, so if you want some oysters, you know who to call- the people picking them!  (843-345-6830)
