Is This Really December?

2008 December 27
by will

It really is hard to believe that we’re almost through with December given the weather we’ve been having.  It’s been incredibly beautiful on the water the past few days with highs in the 70’s, calm winds, and sunny.  The water temperature has stayed down even with the warm air temps, and it’s sitting at 57 in Charleston Harbor right now.  This means that the oysters are still ice and full, but unfortunately it hasn’t helped the shrimping.

Most of the shrimop boat fleet in McClellanville went out yesterday, but didn’t report too much of a catch.  Jeff and Richie had half of a basket on their first drag and decided to come in early.  David on the Village Lady reported a little better catch, but not too much.  We don’t know when shrimp season will close yet, but more than likely it will be in mid January.  DNR bases the closure on what size the shrimp being caught are and how much is being caught.

Nine bushels of the oysters I picked yesterday went to a good friends house, Brantlee DeBrux.  The oysters were great, cooked old-school on an open fire (my favorite for a roast).  I saw a bunch of old friends that I grew up with on Sullivan’s Island (Happy B-Day Tina!).  It’s always great seeing the old Island Boys and Girls over an oyster table.

Jeff is going out today with Stephen, and its another beautiful day.  I will be out tomorrow through the new year.  I’m enjoying the weather we’re having, but I have this sneaking suspicion that we’re going to pay for it in January and February…
