Good Shrimping Before the Cold
Richie and Chanler went out to Bull’s Bay yesterday to check the shrimp before the cold snap. The only other shrimp boat out other than the Miss Henrietta was the Miss Shirley Mae with Captain Clarence. Both boats did pretty well the first two drags, each catching about 200 pounds. They were working pretty far offshore and the shrimp were counting 16-20’s.
Captain Clarence decided to go in after two drags, but Richie decided to have a go at a third drag. It was a good decision, and he more than doubled his catch with the third drag. They ended up with about 430 pounds of big, beautiful shrimp. You just never know when the good drag will come, but Richie has a feel for it.
The water temperature in Charleston Harbor is sitting around 51 degrees this morning. The air didn’t get too cold until early this morning, so the bulk of the cold snap is still to come. We’re going to be crossing our fingers that it stays above 45 degrees; otherwise, next years catch will die in the creeks.
